Driving Tips

Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration and late braking as all of these waste gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town.

Gas mileage typically decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. For each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas.

Remove all of the extra weight from your car that is possible. Every extra 100 pounds of weigh typically reduces your gas mileage by up to 2%-3%.

Do not sit in idle, your car is burning gas but getting no mileage.

Drive at consistent speeds. Constantly accellerating and decelerating will increase your gasoline use. Try top drive at a steady speed. Cruise control will greatly assist you when driving on the highway in keeping a constant speed, and as a result will save you money.

When you can, use overdrive gears. Overdrive gears do improve the fuel economy of your car during highway driving. Your cars engine speed decreases when you use overdrive and this reduces both fuel usage and engine wear.

Plan your route. If you can avoid city traffic and road construction to avoid sitting in idle when possible.

Anticipate approaching hills. Start to accelerate prior to reaching the hill, not while you are on it.

When starting your car, do not let it idle for more than 30 seconds, even in cold weather. Todays cars are designed to be driven almost immediately.
